Prolong the life of your HVAC system
Would you like to know how to prolong the life of your HVAC system? After all, a new system is quite a costly investment and keeping it healthy and efficient is the key to a long, productive life. Below we’ll share some tips with you to help protect your HVAC system from premature failure.
- Preseason checkup and cleaning: Before any seasonal cycle, have a thorough checkup and cleaning of your system by a reputable HVAC contractor. The ideal time for these checkups are early spring and early fall, before temperatures change drastically. By doing this you can catch any critical issues before each season starts.
- Check your air filters: We always stress the importance of inspecting and changing air filters (see here and here), and we’ll stress it again — air filters are critical to the efficient function of you HVAC system. Change them often, and use only high quality filters for maximum efficiency and protection.
- Do periodic visual inspections: Although you probably don’t have the equipment to do a proper evaluation for air leaks, coolant levels and air flow efficiency, that doesn’t mean you can’t visually inspect all the HVAC equipment in and around your home. Look for leaks/puddles near your air handler and outside unit, corroded wires, (never touch them!) and debris that could be blocking the outside unit’s fan.
- Give your system a break: If your HVAC system is running seven days a week, you are putting a great amount of strain on it. It’s important to give your system a much-needed break so it is not overworked. If you don’t have an automated thermostat, invest in one, and set it have your system running when you need it and off when you don’t.
