Three Essential Facts About Ductless AC
Ductless AC or mini-split air conditioning systems are an excellent choice for homeowners who own a house that won’t accommodate ductwork or have one with existing ductwork. These systems are quiet, efficient, and in many cases, offer unprecedented zone control. Even though this great technology has been around for quite some time, many people still don’t understand the basics. Below we’ve outlined three key facts that will help you better understand ductless air conditioning:
- Fact One: Ductless AC systems provide both heating and cooling without the need for extensive ductwork. These systems contain two major components: An outdoor unit/heat pump and an indoor unit. The outdoor unit acts as a compressor or heat pump, and the indoor unit acts as an air handler.
- Fact Two: These systems work the same way as traditional systems do. In the summer, the air handler takes warm air and passes it over evaporator coils filled with refrigerant. The coils absorb heat from the air and direct it to the outdoor unit and out of your home. During the winter, the outdoor unit absorbs existing heat from the outside air and passes it through the refrigerant line to your air handler, which will blow warm air into your home.
- Fact Three: The Installation of a ductless system is much easier and less labor-intensive than installing a new central air unit. A typical installation consists of drilling a hole through your home, mounting the outdoor and indoor units and coupling them together. Easy doesn’t mean simple, and only a professional with extensive ductless experience should handle the installation.
